Star Trek Discovery - Klingon Sarcophagus Ship

This was a really dark and fun set to work on. It’s the interior of a klingon spaceship that is basically cemetary. The initial concept was worked out by Sam Mischlap and who had this one great view that set the tone and I had to take his view and work out how to flesh that out into a set.

Concept Development

These are views of the exterior showing how the Klingon sarcophagi would fit into the hull.

At the same time, we had to figure out how to build it. Luckily we had a construction crew who was willing to experiment with us and work out to make this set a reality. We had an extremely detailed digital model and wanted to be able to transfer as much of that information to the set as quickly as possible.

We had to figure out what consoles would like and how to take the gothic base and give it a sense of technology. And since it was Star Trek, it had to feel like technology and not magic.

The style we found for the interior was something that I came to think of as ‘Smeary Gothic’. I would take these Gothic details and ‘smear’ them over our curvilinear spaceship shapes that formed our interior walls.
